DIY Super Hero & Rocket Valentines

A couple of days ago I received a text message from my friend. She jokingly asked when I was coming over to help make Valentines with her boys...since last year I helped her two oldest boys make their own Valentines for all the kids in their class: Guitar & Fish Valentine. I told her I was in! =) I looked up a couple of ideas that I thought they might like & they each picked out which one they liked the most. This is what they picked:
Parker picked the super hero lollipops.
Jake picked the Rocket Valentines.

So.....Skip to My Lou did a really great Valentine Tutorial. I just did mine a little different...this is a CANDY FREE Valentine. (& super inexpensive) =) If you want to do your rocket like mine, you can download Valentine Rockets
I printed up the 'you're a blast' clouds so Jake could write all of his class-mates names on the backs. He had 25 classmates!!!!! That's a lot of writing!!
If you print my download there is a 6 inch circle pattern, rocket stripes, & 'you're a blast' cloud. You're going want cut out your 6 inch circle as your template. Then you're going to trace out however many circles you need.
You will be cutting out all of your circles, folding them in half, & cutting down the center. I do suggest using construction paper or card stock for the tops of the rockets...you'll want something a little more sturdy then just plain paper.
You'll roll each half circle till you get a point at the top. Tape in place.
We didn't use any hot glue until the end because Jake wanted to do most of the project himself.
Now you have the tops of your rockets finished.
Jake thought they looked like mini party hats. =)
If you use regular paper you'll need to use a toilet paper roll as your base to wrap the paper around. If you use card stock you do not need the toilet paper rolls. There are 2 stripe wraps on my download, just cut down the center line.
On some of the rockets we used the toilet paper rolls & then we realized we didn't need the toilet paper rolls because I printed all the stripes on card stock paper. =) We just taped in place.
Little hands wanted to help big brother. =)
We got all the rolls done & then we taped all the 'you're a blast' clouds to the front insides of each tube.
Jake wanted to do it by himself. He did a great job!
Then we attached the tissue paper. This was his favorite part. He got a little crazy with the tissue paper...He wanted to make sure it looked like fire coming out of the bottoms. I just cut a big piece of tissue paper in fourths. Then pinched it in the middle and taped the pinched part inside the tube behind the 'you're a blast' cloud.
The tops needed to be hot glued on...so I did that part for him. =)
He loved them & he can't wait to give them to his friends!!! yeah!!
We pretty much did Parker's exactly the way Little Bit Funky did them. She has a great tutorial and download available. We just didn't take the time to cut each card on the lollipop stick out in a circle shape...basically I didn't have a giant punch like she did & I didn't want to buy one. They look fine square. =)
The only thing I wish I would have done with Parker is made masks for the lollipop heads. Zakka Life has her own download with masks & cape you can print. I didn't think Parker would like the hearts on the capes though, so that's why we chose to do the real super heroes. The other thing I would have done was print the capes on card stock: Super Hero Cape Download It would have saved us some time gluing all the super hero logos on the backs of each cape. He was getting tired of gluing towards the end. He even tied all the knots (with a little help)!!!! He had 22 classmates he had to make Valentines for AND 22 classmates names he had to write on the backs on each cape!! He did great!! The only other thing I did in addition was put a piece of tape across the back of the square card on the lollipop stick to secure it in place. The looked like they were going to slide off the end of the lollipop sticks.
In the end he was pretty pleased with his end result of his Valentines. Maybe he was just excited that he had extra lollipops that he was able to eat. =) haahaa! When we were all finished my girlfriend said, 'you know, you make me look good when the boys go into school with their homemade valentines." And in the end that's all that matters....making the mama look good. Because you know the saying, 'if mama's not happy, aint nobody happy!' =)

Happy Valentine's Day a little early. Happy crafting, folks!!
