Ottoman Reupholstering -Part 2

My husband and I went to Joann Fabrics to look for my chevron material and we couldn't find any. =( wah!! I did however find different material that I liked. I pulled out all the fabrics I liked and laid them out for him to see. I told him to choose the one he liked the least and I would put it away. He kept choosing his least favorite until we got it down to our top two favorite fabrics. Now that we had it narrowed down it was decision time. I liked the green and he like the brown...but when it came down to it he said that the fabric I chose would last longer then the fabric he chose....so the green made the cut! =) AND....We just so happened to walk into a 50% off upholstery fabric sale!! YEAH!!! Love those sales. =) I also had a 15% off coupon...so that came off of our total. Our total on fabric was $45 for 3 yards, not bad. =) Now back to work!
Branson is making the lines for me to sew on.
It's hard to see...but the yellow line is what I'll be sewing on.
I cut off some of the extra fabric to make it easier to handle while sewing.
Pinning all my lines into place.
Now for the sewing...
You can sew over your pins...but from my experience (breaking a couple needles) I don't anymore.
Cutting off the excess material....and saving the scraps. =)
Iron down the seem. I also sewed a straight line across the top of the point so that when we put the
new cover on our cushion there wouldn't be harsh points on the corners but a more muted edge.
As you can see the in background the cover fits perfectly! Exciting!! I was a little nervous...
this was my first time sewing fabric being used for reupholstering. Branson is spraying the lid
with fabric adhesive to make sure it doesn't shift while stapling into place.
What we realized we forgot to dull the points of the plywood once we flipped it over onto the cushion...
Just to make sure the plywood wouldn't poke or wear the
material right at the corners, Branson rounded all the edges.
We added just a little bit of batting where the material would meet the wood for some extra protection.
I didn't need to use batting to wrap the entire cushion because it already had batting on it. I used
some of the batting from the sides from when I took the ottoman apart. I saved and reused
the batting to save some money.
Branson had to draw lines to show him where the screws
for the hinges go...since we upholstered over the holes.
And the top of the ottoman is finished!!
Now I have to cut and sew the fabric for the sides of the base of the ottoman.
Branson is reattaching the hinges to the top so we can upholster the bottom.
It's so exciting to see it slowly coming together!! =)
Now for stapling the base...We started in the middle and worked our way out.
And we started in the front and worked our way around to the back...that way if
there were any problems that we ran into they would be in the back and no the front.
Again, I reused the batting that I saved. We tacked the batting into place first and then slipped the cover over-top and then stapled all the way around, top and bottom.
We have to attach the two pieces back together again.
Branson screwed in the legs.
It's finished!!! (sort of) I still have to get cheap-o fabric to line the inside, but that can wait.
I love this!!!!!
What do you think? I definitely think it was worth the time it took us. =) If we break down the cost...
plywood $5 each X 2, 2X4 $2.50, hinges $3 each X 4, fabric was $45....which comes to $69.50
for the ottoman that I got for free originally. I think that's a pretty good deal. Let me know what you
think. Do you have any upholstery projects that you have done yourself? Do share!!! =)

    1. I would love to see how yours turns out! Please post the link when you're finished. I love seeing other people's work. Why is chevron so popular yet so hard to find? Maybe that's what makes is so "cool" =) So...about the inside of the ottoman...no, I haven't finished covering the inside. I got a little sidetracked with life. =P I'll be tackling that project soon. When I get it finished I'll post pictures. Sorry, I know that doesn't help you now!
