Making Deodorant (without aluminum)

Let's add this one up. The prices varies depending on what store and what brand, but my 1 lb. box of baking soda cost $0.52, 16 oz. box of corn starch cost $1.00, 15 oz. jar of Nutiva organic extra-virgin coconut oil $15.00, lime extract $5.00, vitamin E oil $4.00...which comes to a grand total of $25.52....we made 2 sticks of deodorant and had some deodorant left over (approximately a half a stick).

There are 30 tablespoons in a 15 oz. jar of the coconut oil. You need 2 tablespoons for each batch...which means it allows for 15 batches....one batch makes 2.5 sticks of deodorant......sooooooo, that gives you 37.5 sticks of deodorant per 15 oz. jar of coconut oil!! Using the coconut oil alone cost you approximately $0.40 per stick!! It is well worth your time and your money!! One more thing before you start...I do recommend you wear plastic gloves or you'll have deodorant all over your hands. =)

Ingredients:
·   Corn starch
·   Baking soda
·   Coconut oil
·   Essential oils (optional, take note you want to make sure it will smell good with coconut oil)
·   Vitamin E (also optional)
·   An empty deodorant container (I saved my old ones) to be filled with your new deodorant (make sure you clean it out really well)

As I’ve said before in my laundry detergent post, essential oils have different and many purposes. Some are for relaxing you, other are medicinal. Check this website out for some pointers in antibacterial essential oils holisticmamas.com another website worth looking at is www.jeannerose.net she has the top 5 antibacterial essential oils.

It's also warned that some essential oils are highly antibacterial and could cause skin irritation. This is the only thing that you have to do by trial an error…use your essential oil of choice, but only use in moderation until you know that your body won’t be affected negatively by it. Do your research on your essential oils. If you’re too nervous of any side effects...then don't use them. They are optional. =)

Start with combining 1/4 cup cornstarch with 1/4 cup baking soda. Add essential oils (We used 8 drops of lime). Add 2 tablespoons coconut oil and a few drops of vitamin E oil. (We realized really fast that the coconut oil that we bought had a really low melting point and was runny at first. We had to throw it in the fridge to stiffen it back up again. We’ll be buying different coconut oil next time…the coconut oil we bought worked but we had to add more [equal parts] of the baking soda and corn starch)

Knead all your ingredients together. You want it to be the same consistency as the deodorant you’d buy in the store. Again, we had to add a little more of the baking soda and corn starch to make it stiffer.

Start filling up your container!!! Just keep mashing it in there until you can get as much in there as possible.

Let it set up for a day or two. (We’ve been keeping ours in the fridge…just in case). If you want to see the original post go to: www.instructables.com Let me know how yours turns out! =)
