Surviving Hurricane Sandy

As you know hurricane Sandy, AKA Mega Storm or Frankenstorm, hit the East coast the week of Halloween (which happens to be my birthday). Pennsylvania didn't get hit too horribly bad. The good thing was people here were taking the necessary precautions to be prepared if we did get hit hard. My friends were posting pictures on Facebook of the bread aisle in the grocery stores...every single one was completely empty! Another friend was looking for a generator. It seemed as though everyone was buying one. They called every store all the way up to Harrisburg & they were all out! I have to admit; I didn't really go crazy into preparations....I did fill up all of our water pitchers and made sure everything was charged. I wasn't too worried about our area being hit hard.

Late Monday, October 29th was when the storm was rolling in for us. Branson was let out of work early to beat the high winds. We just hunkered down and waited for the worst. Our friend who lives in the same development came over so I made a chicken-tortilla casserole for dinner...the lights started to flicker. I was getting a little nervous that the electric would go out in the middle of cooking dinner. The electric went out 3 times and then finally went out for good around 10:30 PM. We didn't get our electric back until 11:30 AM the next day.

In the morning we decided to go driving around to see what damage there was in the area.
Some large branches fell onto some cars in our development.
The main road into town was closed due to a huge tree falling over the road and taking down some power lines.
There were a lot of roads closed due to downed trees.
You can't hardly see it, but there is another tree over the road.
I was actually kind of nervous about trees falling on us as we were driving!
This tree landed on the power lines. There were a lot of areas surrounding us that didn't get electric until this past Saturday. =(
A poll with a transformer snapped in half.
I'm surprised this didn't cause a fire...there were many electrical fires in our surrounding area.
Even one of my parent's trees fell down. This tree is 100 years old...so my dad was really disappointed it fell down. =(
We were surprised it didn't hit the pool...it did take out their phone and internet lines.
It was a HUGE tree!
My parents & Branson & I went for breakfast that morning to the only place in town that had electric! It was packed! Everyone who didn't have electric came there for breakfast.
I decided to see if my niece wanted some company since everyone was off work that day.
She lives in Philadelphia. I'm not confident about driving there by myself yet...so, Branson agreed to go with me! Yeah! I decided to bring the rest of my Chicken-Tortilla Casserole along for dinner. Yummy!!!

Chicken-Tortilla Casserole Recipe
Ingredients
1 can cream of chicken
1 1/2 cup of sour cream
3/4 cup milk or chicken broth
1 can whole corn (drained)
1 (16 oz) jar chunky salsa
6 flour tortillas
1 lb. grated cheese
4-6 cooked chicken breasts, cut up or shredded

Instructions
Mix cream of chicken, sour cream, milk/chicken broth, & drained corn together in a separate bowl making a 'soup mix'. Spread 1/2 of 'soup mix' on bottom of 9X13 Pyrex dish. Tear 3 tortillas apart in approximately 1 inch pieces and place on top of 'soup mix'. Add chicken, 1/2 of salsa, 1/2 of the grated cheese, & then top with the other 3 tortillas (torn into 1 inch pieces). Then add the rest of the 'soup mix', salsa, & cheese. Bake @ 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until done.
We had quite a time getting there...with a lot of the trees over the roads.
Another power line down.
We took a couple detours to get to her apartment...but we finally made it! Yeah!!
We played Parcheesi (which is kind of like Sorry).
Tashia is explaining the rules. =)
Then we played, my personal favorite, Skip Bo. Which Tashia & I tore Branson to pieces at! haahaa!! =)
Even her kitty, Dipstick, was happy for visitors....he got a new toy to play with. =) I'm glad we got to go up there for the majority of the day. =) Hopefully I'll become more confident about driving by myself so I can visit her by myself. =)

Those on the far East coast were hit pretty hard by hurricane Sandy. A lot of them lost their homes & some of them lost family members. =( My heart goes out to those affected by the hurricane! My church is doing non-perishable food collection. I'm glad I can be a part of helping the Sandy victims. If you would like to take part in helping those in need take a look at the links below.
