Anyway, we think its supposed to rain tomorrow...boooooo!!! I'm crossing my fingers that it will either hold off or stop before they would have to cancel it. In preparation to possibly having a wet bottom (you're not allowed to bring chairs), I decided I was going to make a water-proof roll-up blanket. The blanket itself is only a standard towel size (57"X24") due to the concerts regulations, but it's actually something that rolls up small enough you could throw it in an over sized purse or just in your car for those last minute park or picnic excursions.
What you will need:
~a cutting board
~rotary cutters
~scissors
~ruler
~12 1/2 quilters block
~sewing machine
~your choice of fabric (eight 12 1/2 squares)
~a vinyl table cloth (with the fuzzy stuff on the back)
I got this tablecloth at Walmart for super cheap.
Pick out the color scheme you want to go with...
Then cut three 12 1/2 inch squares from each fabric.
Iron them all so they don't sew crooked.
Figure out what pattern you want to sew.
Sew the top two blocks together leaving a quarter inch seam and then sew
the next two together and continue till all your rows are sewn together.
When I put the blocks down I thought they were too big for the blanket, so I decide to cut the
rows I just sewed together in 6 1/4 inch strips (basically just cutting your 12 1/2 blocks in half)
So this is what it will look like instead of the large blocks.
Once you've ironed your rows, sew them together, iron again...now you're ready to pin.
Pin your quilt top face-to-face with the water-proof tablecloth.
Sew the long sides first and then one end (leave the other end for later). Turn your blanket right side out and lightly iron on the cloth side (NOT the plastic tablecloth side). Be very careful, you do not want to burn your plastic tablecloth. =) Leave your other end opened but turn in the edges so you can sew that end shut. You can add a ribbon here so you'll be able to roll your blanket up and tie it so it stays. In my case I used scraps left from the blanket. You can just use ribbon if you like. Make sure you pin the bottom and pin the ribbon in place before you sew it shut.
Wah-lah! =) A simple water-proof blanket on the go! =)
I can't wait to use it tomorrow at the concert!!! Pray it doesn't rain!!
